About Rose & Raven

The story behind the rose and the raven

Rose & Raven Memorials was not planned. It was answered; one community post, one grieving widower, and one ceremony that changed everything.

Meet your celebrant

The person who will sit with your family's story

Crystal Bettencourt founded Rose & Raven Memorials in December 2025, after one widower's Christmas wish showed her what she was meant to do. She brings a rare combination to the hardest week of a family's life: genuine empathy, patient listening, and a lifelong gift for finding the true words.

When you invite her in, expect tea, unhurried conversation, and questions that make you smile through tears. What she writes afterwards will sound like your person ; because it will be built from them.

“Every family I sit with teaches me something about love. That is the privilege of this work.”

I

The post

Days before Christmas, a local community post appeared: an elderly gentleman had lost his wife of more than sixty years. Grieving, and with the holidays closing every door, he could not find a celebrant available to honour her.

II

The offer

Crystal had helped families with informal celebrations of life before. She answered the post and offered what she had; a patient ear, genuine care, and a lifelong way with words.

III

The listening

Over several unhurried conversations, he told her about sixty years of marriage; the small rituals, the hard seasons, the private jokes. She listened to all of it, and wrote a ceremony that held it all.

IV

The calling

The ceremony moved the whole family. And Crystal understood what she was meant to do: a vocation built around empathy, deep listening, and finding the true words at the hardest time.

Rose & Raven Memorials: Love. Remembered. Celebrated.

“He trusted a stranger with sixty years of love. I have never taken that trust lightly since; and I never will.”

Our philosophy

Grief has no script. Neither do we.

There is no wrong way to grieve

Everyone grieves differently. Some families need laughter in the same breath as tears; some need silence, ritual, music, or irreverence. There is no single right way; and we will never hand you someone else's. Your ceremony takes the shape of your grief and your person, not a template.

Honest, never sugarcoated

A real life includes flaws, quirks, contradictions and wild chapters; alongside the wins, accomplishments, relationships, stories and legacy. We capture the whole person, so your family leaves feeling they were fully represented, and that the important things were not left unsaid.

A gentle guide

Celebrant, clergy, or funeral director?

This is what we do

Funeral Celebrant

Focuses entirely on the person who died; their beliefs, stories and character. Ceremonies can be secular, spiritual, or anywhere in between, shaped wholly around your family.

Traditional Clergy

Leads services within a particular faith tradition. A beautiful fit when that tradition was central to your person's life; less so when it wasn't.

Funeral Director

Arranges the logistics; venue, transport, paperwork, care of the body. Essential professionals, but crafting and delivering the ceremony itself is a different craft.
